Under the knife...

Tomorrow, about the time most of you will be sipping your morning coffee, I'll be doing this.

At least I won't be doing this!

I'm a little nervous (I had one Braveheart execution nightmare), first surgery and all but I'll be glad when it's done and I've recovered. I've been told my hernia is 'very small' but it still finds a way to make me uncomfortable on occassion. So, Doc's going in to put things back where they belong and do a little seismic retrofit. Looking forward to having the GI back on track.

yikes! I hope surgery went well, Mike. why do men suffer more hernias than women?

Hey, Alli! I've been trying to email you about Monday but my emails bounce.

Recover well.

Then let me know how it goes; the doc is musing on whether I should do the same. The upside is that the surgeon says I could race in the Olympics within a week after the surgery. Seems easier than all that training & qualifying.

VG - the answer is that guys are generally born predisposed to have two inguinal hernias; the inguinal canal gets enlarged when the 'boys' migrate out of the body cavity into the scrotum.

I'm home, up and about. All went well. My lower abs are sore and there are a few numb spots (I hope that goes away ;) ) but otherwise I feel pretty good.

Rick, I would say if your situation is bothering you get it fixed. Dr. Stanten (chief surgeon at Summit/Alta Bates) was great. I was out in less than an hour and the worst part so far was coming out of the anesthesia (I don’t like feeling drugged).

VB & Lauren – The inguinal canal Rick described is an inherent weakness in the abdominal wall in all men; some weaker than others. Bearing down too hard on your abs (holding your breath and lifting) forces tissue through the weakness. Once the ‘door is open’ it doesn’t close again on its own. I think I read Hernia surgery is the most common surgery in the US.

Thanks for all the well wishes. More soon.

Glad to hear things went well with the surgery. Am awfully upset that I clicked on your second link. Totally digusting. How you find that photo...by googling "the most disgusting cartoon drawing of medevil surgery?" Pretty gross. No hernia means muy speedo on the bike next year. Look out.

Wow, somehow in all the no ping madness I completely missed this post (even though I saw the one after it that I commented on...) -- major brain fart on my part! Glad that everything went well.

And I am glad that you did not have to go through that second photo. Yikes.
